I first contacted Ruth back in January 2015 with a view to converting my old cellar into a habitable area/cinema room. The project was going to be a major one and had been in the planning for many years.

The cellar in question was only accessible from the front of the property and was directly located below the ground floor of the property, so a staircase would have to be built leading down from the ground floor (kitchen/living room).

Ruth recommended a local French builder called Jean-Jacques to carry out the building work (and a superb one he was too). She project managed from start to finish, including liaising with the town hall with regards to planning permission all the way through to completion of the project, which took a lot of pressure off me.

She suggested installing a concrete beam and block floor, raised off the floor and installing a drainage system underneath from all sides of the room. The property is butted into the side of a hill and the cellar is subterranean. The village experiences flooding out of season, as is normal in the Languedoc area. In addition about 30 tons of material had to be excavated out of the cellar to increase head height.

If you a considering carrying out a similar project or any type of building work, I would highly recommend Ruth’s services. She is friendly and professional and will give you piece of mind at all stages of the build, however small or large it is.

Ruth was the only one to suggest a beam and block floor with a drainage system. I did speak to a number of other builders before I met Ruth and they all suggested just pouring cement onto the floor and never spoke about drainage at any point, this would have been utter madness and the room would have flooded out of season.
